EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Initial thoughts and observations after the Washington Redskins' 24-13 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday:
What it means: The Redskins have now lost six straight and do way too many things wrong to give themselves a chance to win a game. And now you have to wonder what owner Dan Snyder is thinking: Everyone has told him that Robert Griffin III can’t get it done. And, although he led the offense to only 10 points, he did not look overmatched (like he did versus Tampa Bay) in relief of injured starter Colt McCoy. Griffin remains a project in the pocket, but he made plays and provided some energy to the offense as he looked like a confident player on the field for the first time in a while. Every game is different and not every defense is susceptible to bootlegs, etc., but he looked better when on the move. It’ll be interesting to see how the Redskins handle this moving forward. They almost have to play Griffin to either let him prove he can play or so they can prove to the owner that he can't.
Turning point: The Redskins appeared to take a 17-7 lead at halftime when Griffin dove into the end zone as the play clock expired. But after a review, officials ruled that Griffin lost control of the ball. By doing so, he had to regain it through the play, and when Griffin lost the ball after crossing the goal line, it became a fumble and a touchback. It was the sort of play and momentum that Washington needed and the sort that it hasn’t received much this season. It was a gamble by Griffin because had he been stopped short, the half would have been over. Had he controlled the ball, it would have been a terrific run.
Stock watch: Going down: Jay Gruden. At some point, they need to get a win to justify that they’re headed in the right direction. They consistently make bad plays, and you can’t pin everything on the coach. But Gruden still hasn’t shown enough as an offensive coach, either. That’s his strength.
Game balls: Had Griffin been able to score on that play right before halftime, then he would have received one. But it’s not as if anyone had such a good game that he stands above anyone else. Chris Thompson provided a little jolt with two catches for 13 yards and a touchdown.
What’s next: The Redskins host the Philadelphia Eagles at 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday as they continue limping to the finish line.
