SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers, who emerged relatively unscathed from Saturday night’s training camp-opening practice at Levi’s Stadium despite the grass coming up in clumps in certain areas, will again practice on their game-day field Sunday.
Niners head coach Jim Tomsula said the field checked out fine overnight -- crews rolled the field -- but added that warm-up drills would be adjusted to different areas, what with the places where the receivers and defensive backs worked, nearest the West sidelines, getting particularly shredded.
“I thought the field was decent,” offered nose tackle Ian Williams. “With guys my size, and receivers cutting up field, anything can happen.
“If there was a safety risk, we wouldn’t be out there.”
Still, with the somewhat-overused Levi’s Stadium sod becoming an issue again -- it was replaced at least three times last season and played host to an international soccer match last weekend as well as a high school football all-star game before Saturday night’s practice -- one has to wonder why not move practice to the practice facility next door.
“We’re going to practice on the game field,” Tomsula said. “That’s what we’re going to do. We feel like we’re in a good spot with the game field.”
The Niners’ first eight practices are scheduled to be at Levi’s Stadium.
Tomsula said the only injured player to come out of Saturday night’s helmets and shorts practice was undrafted rookie receiver Issac Blakeney, who suffered a muscle pull and would not practice Sunday at 4:15 p.m. PT.
