SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- As the San Francisco 49ers purportedly get closer to locking up Garrett Celek to a long-term deal, the Niners announced Monday they had waived another tight end in Brian Leonhardt.
Leonhardt, who initially was signed to the Niners’ practice squad on Nov. 17 after the trade of Vernon Davis to the Denver Broncos and a rash of injuries to other tight ends, was promoted to the 53-man roster on Dec. 12. He played in four games and had a 4-yard reception at Cleveland in his Niners debut (Week 14).
“Just in case they need me,” Leonhardt said at the time. “I’m learning as much as I can as soon as possible.”
In his three-year career, Leonhardt, who played at 49ers general manager Trent Baalke’s alma mater of Bemidji State, has seven catches for 39 yards, with a 3-yard TD catch from Derek Carr while with the Oakland Raiders against the Dolphins in London in 2014.
