RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks held a light 75-minute practice Friday with players in shorts. The reason for the break is the team is going to scrimmage Saturday.
The defense seemed to get the best of the action with good coverage against passing plays.
Rookie free-agent wide receiver Douglas McNeil has been a player to watch in the early going because the Seahawks are playing him out of position. At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, McNeil has good deep speed and made plays in OTAs and the minicamp.
McNeil has worked the past two days at cornerback. The Seahawks like tall cornerbacks, and McNeil has the speed that might help him to succeed. He had three drops in a practice earlier this week and that may be influencing the decision to experiment with him at corner. The team may also want to see if he is versatile enough to play both positions.
Defensive tackle Jesse Williams has said he has not been officially declared cancer free, but he has been cleared to be on the field and to start to practice soon. Williams, who was in uniform Friday for the light workout, had a kidney removed and is making an incredible comeback.
Seahawks players were surprised to learn of the release of San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith. But knowing that he had a troubled past, some weren't surprised to learn of his latest arrest. Smith has been a big part of the Seahawks-49ers rivalry and is one of top defensive players in the league.
There is nothing new to report on Kam Chancellor's holdout. The Seahawks have made it clear to him that they are not going to change his contract.
