Brandon Browner's one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks is for $760,000 and contains no guaranteed money. The structure of the deal confirms what many suspected when the Browner deal was announced: He'll be competing for a roster spot this summer.
As we wrote about previously, Browner has a couple of things going for him. One, he knows the scheme, and the coaching staff is familiar with how to best maximize his talents. Browner said he was playing through a torn MCL last season, and New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has admitted that the team did not do a great job of playing to Browner's strengths.
And two, it's possible that the Seahawks see a specialized role for Browner. Given his size (6-foot-4, 221 pounds), perhaps Browner could be a matchup play when the Seahawks face big tight ends or wide receivers.
On the roster right now, Richard Sherman, Jeremy Lane and DeShawn Shead appear to be locks, although Shead could be looked at as more of a safety depending on who else emerges.
Others like Tye Smith, Tharold Simon, Stanley Jean-Baptiste, George Farmer, Trovon Reed, Mohammed Seisay and Marcus Burley will be competing for two or three roster spots.
Browner and whomever the team adds in the draft will join that group and battle it out at training camp.
