TAMPA, Fla. -- With training camp starting on Saturday, it’s time for a position-by-position look at the Buccaneers.
Let’s start with the quarterbacks.
Throughout the offseason program, the Bucs had rookie Jameis Winston and Mike Glennon sharing the first-team work. That was done largely so that Winston could step back and learn from Glennon.
But it will be a major surprise if Winston doesn’t get all the first-team work in camp. Coach Lovie Smith has said he won’t alternate first-team work once the team gets to camp. That means it’s safe to assume Winston will be taking the first-team snaps.
He was drafted first overall, and that means the Bucs are expecting Winston to play right away. He fared well in the offseason program, picking up the offense quickly and developing chemistry with receivers Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson. The focus in camp will be on limiting Winston’s interceptions.
Glennon is a solid backup. He has a strong arm and has started 18 games over the past two seasons. But this isn’t a competition. The starting job already belongs to Winston.
Seth Lobato isn’t likely to make the 53-man roster, but he’s a candidate for the practice squad.
