A quick observation of quarterback Zach Mettenberger and how he played in the Tennessee Titans' 36-7 loss to the Giants in Week 14:
It was the worst of Mettenberger's six starts for the Titans. He was under siege the whole time as the Titans started two backup tackles for the second week in a row, then had to turn to third-string right tackle Terren Jones.
Mettenberger was sacked five times, and Tennessee allowed eight overall. He connected on just 14 of 24 throws for 125 yards with no touchdowns and a pick. It was his first start without a touchdown pass. He's thrown an interception in every game.
Mettenberger left in the fourth quarter after reinjuring his sprained throwing shoulder, and according to multiple reports, he's out for the season.
Coach Ken Whisenhunt maintains while Mettenberger is doubtful for Sunday against the Jets, he has a chance to return after that. I don't think he has a chance.
Whisenhunt said it's important Mettenberger "stays in it and tries to get back." To me, that means he doesn't want to put him on injured reserve and have him wander off; he wants him in the meetings and on the field working through things, at least mentally, for three more weeks.
In the meantime, Jake Locker's about to commence a three-game audition for his next job.
