Odds and ends after the first day of free agency:
CB Perrish Cox: He will visit the Redskins on Wednesday, according to the NFL Network. The former San Francisco 49er expressed a desire to return but he’s free and headed here for a visit. Cox began last season as a nickelback, but injuries pushed him into the lineup and he responded. The Redskins do have other corners on the roster in David Amerson, DeAngelo Hall and Bashaud Breeland. But you can’t say this group is set. Amerson struggled last season and Hall is coming off a torn Achilles. Plus, nickel corner Tracy Porter is on the roster, but considering his durability issues he has to be a potential cut if they sign someone else.
DL Stephen Paea: The Redskins agreed to a deal with the former Chicago Bear. Here's my scouting report.
LB Brian Orakpo: He’ll visit Tennessee and then, if there’s no deal, he’ll head to Arizona. Washington remains in the mix. Clearly he’s looking for more than what the Redskins are offering, but the Cardinals will make a big push for him.
RB Roy Helu: Agreed to a deal with the Raiders. In the end, the Redskins were not trying to retain him. The Redskins now must find a third-down back, but based on the inactivity with Helu they already have been looking for another one. Jay Gruden mentioned this last year as something he wanted; didn’t think that thought had changed.
WR Leonard Hankerson: Visiting Atlanta. The Falcons were optimistic before free agency began that they would sign him. His former offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, and former receivers coach, Mike McDaniel, are both in Atlanta.
NT Dan Williams: Nothing going on. The Redskins have not been in contact with him since Saturday.
NT Terrance Knighton: Sounds as if the Redskins remain interested in him. But I don’t know to what extent. He told ESPN’s Josina Anderson that Denver and Oakland were out, for now at least. Newly-signed Stephen Paea is an end in their base 3-4 and will move inside on nickel downs. So, yes, they could still sign a nose tackle. UPDATE: Knighton told Anderson he would visit the Redskins Wednesday.
RB Justin Forsett: Though his name was attached to them before free agency, I was told there was no visit or offer from the Redskins.
S Marcus Gilchrist: All I know is that he will visit with the New York Jets on Wednesday. I know the Redskins had been interested.
S Ron Parker: Have not heard anything since early in the day, shortly after free agency began. At that time, there was a belief a visit might happen. But, thus far, I haven’t heard anything other than several teams are interested in him. He’s considered more of a rising talent and therefore is coveted. I’m not sure about other safeties at this point, including Rahim Moore.
Right tackle: I have not heard of any contact with other free-agent tackles after they missed on Houston’s Derek Newton and Jermey Parnell, who is now with Jacksonville. Anthony Collins was released by Tampa Bay, but is a guy who was cut after one season with a new team really a legitimate answer? But Jay Gruden was his offensive coordinator in Cincinnati.
