TEMPE, Ariz. -- Drafting an underclassmen always comes with risks, one being immaturity.
Arizona Cardinals rookie tackle D.J. Humphries is just 21 years old and he's apparently showing his age on and off the field.
When asked about Humphries' progress Tuesday, the first day of the Cardinals' second week of organized team activities, Arizona coach Bruce Arians said the rookie is coming along "slowly."
"He needs to mature a little bit," Arians said.
Humphries wasn't on the field for Tuesday's practice.
Arians has been impressed by rookie wide receiver Jaxon Shipley, who reported for OTAs last week because of the University of Texas' academic calendar. "He's quick as a cat," Arians said. "He's got really good hands. He's bright. He can find a niche on special teams, maybe as a gunner, punt returner, something in that neighborhood. He's got a chance."
Even though he's unlikely to make the 53-man roster, rookie quarterback Phillip Sims has left an impression on Arians. "When you start looking at guys to come in for rookie minicamp, you don't know what you're getting," Arians said. "He was a pleasant, pleasant surprise." Arians said Sims showed up on the Cardinals' radar through quarterbacks coach Freddie Kitchens, who played at the University of Alabama.
Tyrann Mathieu's recovery story is far from over, but one interesting note from Arians on Tuesday about the Honey Badger's 2014 season was this: "He was playing not to lose and he had never played that way."
Also not practicing Tuesday were safety Brandon Person, and linebackers Shaq Riddick, Alani Fua and Zack Wagenmann.
Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon was also not on the field for practice.
