Continuing a very preliminary look at how the Cleveland Browns roster might shake out come September, with a comparison to last season's numbers after the final cutdown out of preseason.
One caveat: Injuries and circumstance can change the situation in a hurry.
Running back
Book ‘em: Terrance West, Isaiah Crowell, Duke Johnson
Left to ponder: Shaun Draughn, Glenn Winston, Luke Lundy.
Last year/this year: The Browns kept three running backs last year; four could make it this season, though it’s far more likely to be three.
The odd thing about the group is the guy I feel surest about is Johnson. His change-of-pace talents seem to ensure him a spot.
The pair from last season, West and Crowell, combined for 1,280 yards and 12 touchdowns. That’s excellent production from two rookies who yo-yoed in and out of the lineup. The fact that the Browns never settled on one back might contribute to a flawed perception that they weren’t happy with either.
Then again, ProFooballFocus.com rated West 41st among league running backs, and Crowell No. 52. That’s not exactly top-shelf stuff, but both were hurt in the rankings by the Browns inability to use the backs in pass-catching roles. That figures to change this season. New offensive coordinator John DeFilippo said he will continue to go with the 'hot hand,' meaning the Browns might not feature one back again. An injury could open the door for Draughn or Glenn Winston. As for Lundy, the rookie from Ottawa was all over the field in OTAs and could open eyes in preseason. Pencil him in for the practice squad.
On the 53: West, Crowell, Johnson (3). (Previously: Quarterback)
