We're less than two weeks from the start of the 2026 NFL season, when the Seahawks and Patriots meet in a Super Bowl rematch Sept. 9. And with the preseason play wrapped up, front offices and coaching staffs have been busy around the league getting the rosters ready.
The deadline for each team to finalize its 53-man roster was Sunday at 6 p.m. ET. Teams can still make moves, of course, before the opener, but getting down to 53 players by the deadline meant a lot of cuts and trades. Of note, the Cowboys released second-year running back Jaydon Blue, while the Colts retained quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr.

Biggest move: Cutting undrafted cornerback Kani Walker. Walker had a strong training camp and preseason, but this move is more impactful because of where it leaves the initial 53-man roster. The Bills have only three dedicated cornerbacks -- starters Christian Benford and Maxwell Hairston, and rookie backup Davison Igbinosun. General manager Brandon Beane stressed the importance of nailing down the position after the draft and having depth. The team also moved on from seventh-round cornerback Toriano Pride Jr., and Walker will likely be on the practice squad if he is not claimed. Biggest move: Trading Quinn Ewers and acquiring Kyle McCord. The Dolphins' backup quarterback situation was untenable after a cumulatively underwhelming preseason from Cam Miller, Mark Gronowski and Ewers. Swapping Ewers for McCord is still risky; McCord is yet to play an NFL game, while Ewers has three starts. But McCord was one of the top preseason performers and is young enough to qualify as a developmental passer for a young Miami team. Trades involving late-round draft picks to improve depth with T/G Walter Rouse and RB Corey Kiner were notable but not headline-grabbing, which made the team's injury-based decisions the biggest news: Veteran OLB Harold Landry III is starting on the physically unable to perform list, special teams captain Brenden Schooler starts on the non-football injury list and reserve OT Marcus Bryant begins on injured reserve. Biggest move: Not acquiring a third QB. Things could change, but for now, they're riding with Geno Smith and rookie Cade Klubnik, whose preseason was spotty. Inconsistent kicker Jason Sanders survived cutdown day, but that situation is fluid. The Jets addressed their depth on the offensive line, acquiring veteran G/C Jordan Meredith in a trade with the Raiders. The Jets gave up a 2027 sixth-round pick for Meredith and a 2029 seventh-round pick. Meredith, who probably would've been cut after starting 11 games last season, becomes their top backup at center and guard. The Raiders allowed the most sacks in the NFL, and now the Jets have two of their linemen -- Meredith and LG Dylan Parham -- and also Smith. Interesting. -- Rich Cimini

Biggest move: It was the one the Ravens didn't make. Baltimore didn't place Pro Bowl defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike on injured reserve, which means he is eligible for the first four games of the regular season. Madubuike is coming back from a neck injury that sidelined him for the last 15 games of last season and led to a surgery in April. He has suited up for every practice in training camp, but he hasn't participated in team drills, which created uncertainty about his status to start the season. If Madubuike can return in September, it would be a huge boost for a Ravens defense that totaled 30 sacks last season. From the start of 2023 until he was placed on injured reserve Sept. 27, Madubuike's 21.5 sacks were the most by a defensive tackle. -- Jamison Hensley

But that wasn't the only main move. Ke'Shawn Williams kept a spot as well and is in line to replace Charlie Jones as the team's primary returner. Jones, a fourth-round pick in 2023, was dynamic on special teams but struggled to find a role on offense. Biggest move: The Browns trimmed their roster from four quarterbacks to three, but did so without cutting or trading a passer.
Instead, Cleveland placed Dillon Gabriel on injured reserve and designated him to return.
Gabriel injured his back in Cleveland's preseason-closing win against the Patriots on Thursday night, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Gabriel will miss at least the first four games of the season, but the designation could also give the Browns more time to find a trade partner. -- Daniel Oyefusi

Biggest move: The Steelers were active in the trade market on roster cutdown weekend, but the most significant move was activating cornerback Joey Porter Jr. off PUP, meaning he won't have to miss the first four games of the season. Porter was placed on the list after aggravating a back injury during a mobility workout on the first day of training camp, but coach Mike McCarthy recently referred to him as dealing with a "business situation" as the 2023 second-round pick and the team worked through a stalemate in extension talks. Though activating Porter off PUP doesn't signal an impending extension, or that Porter will return to practice, he now has the option to return to the field ahead of the season. If the Steelers are going to get a deal done with Porter, they have two weeks to complete negotiations because the organization doesn't negotiate contracts during the season. -- Brooke Pryor

Biggest move: It won't make huge headlines, but the Colts flipping late-round picks with Buffalo to acquire center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger filled a very obvious hole in the Indianapolis offense. Though the Colts are quite happy with starting center Tanor Bortolini, they endured constant issues during training camp and the preseason with errant snaps from the candidates to be the backup center. During Saturday's preseason game against the Detroit Lions, there were at least five poor snaps to quarterbacks Anthony Richardson Sr. and Riley Leonard. Biggest move: Moving on from OL Chuma Edoga, who can play tackle and guard, is a sign the Jaguars are confident RT Cole Van Lanen will be ready for Week 1. Biggest move: That they kept all three QBs on their depth chart (Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger). As a result, they don't have a long-snapper on the active roster. The Broncos, who opened training camp with 51 of the 53 players who were on the roster for the AFC Championship Game in January, also waived several rookies who would have made it in past years. The Broncos will have their fingers crossed, hoping some of them, such as TE Justin Joly (fifth-round pick) and LB Red Murdock (seventh-round pick), get through waivers. It is even a departure from last season, when Nix and Stidham began the season on the roster and Ehlinger was on the practice squad. This time, Ehlinger, after a three-touchdown night in the preseason finale Friday, made the cut. Biggest move: Although the Chiefs didn't have any major surprises, the biggest trend with their roster is just how many young players are featured throughout. Because the Chiefs are relying on a large rookie class, the defense has just two veterans who are older than 30: pass rusher Chris Jones (32) and linebacker Drue Tranquill (31). The same is true for the offense, with just Patrick Mahomes (30) and Travis Kelce (36). Much of the season will be about how much the rookies and fellow young players improve. -- Nate Taylor

Las Vegas Raiders
Biggest move: The Raiders traded offensive lineman Jordan Meredith and a 2029 seventh-round draft pick to the New York Jets for a 2026 sixth-round pick. Meredith will be reunited with former Raiders teammates Geno Smith and Dylan Parham.
This move was not surprising. The Raiders are satisfied with their depth at guard with Jackson Powers-Johnson, Caleb Rogers, Spencer Burford and rookie Trey Zuhn III. Las Vegas has made Zuhn play every position on the offensive line, including center. Against the San Francisco 49ers in the preseason finale, Zuhn lined up at center alongside members of the starting offensive line, which was a clear sign of how the team viewed Meredith. -- Ryan McFadden

Biggest move: The most surprising move is the release of starting punter JK Scott, meaning for the second year in a row, general manager Joe Hortiz comes into the season with only two specialists. Scott had an inconsistent preseason highlighted by a 20-yard shanked punt in a loss to the Rams and the embarrassing lack of a tackle attempt, which upset coach Jim Harbaugh and special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken, on a punt return touchdown in the Chargers' loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Still, the Chargers value Scott and didn't bring in any competition this offseason because they believe he is good enough to be this team's starting punter. After a disappointing rookie season -- he was inactive for 12 games -- Blue was credited with a more mature approach by the coaches. But once training camp started, he was outplayed by Malik Davis. Blue's speed offered a different skill set than the rest of the position group, but the best he can do for the Cowboys at the moment is end up on the practice squad. Davis had two 100-yard games last season after he earned the job as Javonte Williams' backup, and he can be a core special teamer. Biggest move: Keeping three quarterbacks. The Niners were always going to have starter Brock Purdy and backup Mac Jones on the initial 53-man roster, but retaining Kurtis Rourke as the third signal-caller indicates a few things about the future of the position. First, it shows that Rourke impressed enough in camp to earn a spot on the 53 despite suffering broken ribs in the first half of the first preseason game. With Jones entering the final year of his deal, the Niners are happy to hang on to him now as Purdy's primary backup. And though they'd love to keep him around, growing belief in Rourke could also reopen the possibility of trading Jones at some point. Biggest move: The Seahawks did not activate running back Zach Charbonnet, instead keeping last season's co-starter on the physically unable to perform list as he works his way back from February knee surgery. General manager John Schneider said that was the plan all along. Charbonnet will have to miss at least the first four games -- under the new PUP rule, he can start practicing in Week 3 -- so it'll be up to rookie Jadarian Price to lead Seattle's backfield for the first month of the season. Safety Nick Emmanwori was not placed on injured reserve, but his status for the Sept. 9 opener still remains in question. Emmanwori had ankle surgery in July and did not practice through the preseason even though he was activated off PUP on Aug 11.
