JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars signed five players who participated in last week's rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, including a pass-rushing defensive end to fill the spot that first-round pick Dante Fowler Jr. would have taken had he not suffered a torn left ACL.
Defensive tackle Richard Ash, defensive end Cap Capi, receiver/punt returner Kasey Closs, free safety Desmond Cooper and offensive lineman Jack Rummells are now part of the team's 90-man roster. In other roster moves, the Jaguars released tight end Marcel Jensen, safety Jeremy Deering, kicker Derek Dimke, and receiver Tommy Streeter.
Capi played two seasons at Colorado State and had 10 sacks in 2011 before transferring to Akron, where he had seven sacks in two seasons. He'll play at the Leo spot.
Ash had 42 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss as a senior at Western Michigan after three seasons at Michigan. Closs caught 105 passes for 1,705 yards and 12 touchdowns in two seasons at Portland State. Cooper, who played locally at The Bolles School, played at Wake Forest and UNC Charlotte. He made 89 tackles and broke up 11 passes in two seasons at UNC Charlotte. Rummells played at Northern Iowa and started his final two seasons at left tackle.
