With the initial frenzy of free agency over, we’ll start a look here at how the Kansas City Chiefs might line up at the various position groups and analyze whether the Chiefs have more work to do.
TIGHT END
Likely starter: Travis Kelce
Backups: Demetrius Harris, Richard Gordon
Others under contract or protected with a tender offer: Brandon Barden and Adam Schiltz
Analyzing the need: The three-tight end formations were the best thing the Chiefs had going on offense last season before Harris and the since-released Anthony Fasano were injured. If they intend to get back to that, the Chiefs have more work to do here. Kelce is their only proven player at the position. He caught 67 passes for 862 yards and five touchdowns last year, and those numbers should only improve with more playing time. Harris, a basketball player in college, is still learning his new craft, but he has plenty of potential and could be ready to step into the No. 2 tight end role. Beyond that, Gordon is just a journeyman, while Barden and Schiltz are developmental prospects. As things stand, the Chiefs would be in a difficult position if Kelce missed a significant amount of time because of injuries. They need more insurance.
