SAN DIEGO -- With the San Diego Chargers taking Sunday off, heading into game preparation leading up to the team’s exhibition opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, I thought we’d take a look at a handful of players who have done some things to get noticed during training camp.
I want to avoid some of the bigger names who have played well, like Melvin Ingram, Keenan Allen and Stevie Johnson, choosing instead to focus on some of the younger players fighting for spots on the back end of the roster.
Darius Philon -- As advertised, the Arkansas product has a quick get-off and uses his hands well rushing the passer. He’s also been better than expected against the run. With Tenny Palepoi being placed on the season-ending injured reserve, Philon has a chance to earn time as an interior defensive line rotational player.
Colton Underwood -- He’s flashed as a pass-rusher during one-on-one drills and plays with a high motor. The Illinois State product also offers versatility, with an ability to play inside and outside linebacker, and has the potential to develop into a core special-teams player.
Tyrell Williams -- The small-school product out of Western Oregon made a couple catches during Saturday’s scrimmage and has shown the ability to get separation as a route runner. At 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, Williams has the size and catch radius the Chargers look for in a receiver.
Michael Huey -- I’ve been impressed with the quickness, leverage and effort Huey has played with so far during camp. He can play all three interior offensive line positions and has been used as an extra tight end in short-yardage situations.
Kyle Miller -- At 6-5 and 262 pounds, Miller can catch the ball as an in-line tight end and also has worked as a fullback. He’s an underrated athlete who has a chance to earn a roster spot with Antonio Gates missing the first four regular-season games due to his suspension.
Javontee Herndon -- A member of San Diego’s practice squad as a rookie last season, Herndon does a nice job of catching the ball in traffic and plays physical. He also can return kicks.
Cordarro Law -- He was active for three games last season and has a knack for creating pass rush. I’m interested to see how he performs in preseason play.
Patrick Robinson -- The six-year veteran quickly picked up San Diego’s scheme and offers versatility because of his ability to play slot defender and on the perimeter. He adds depth to an already-solid secondary.
