SAN DIEGO -- One thing the San Diego Chargers were not for most of last season was healthy.
But to start this 2016 season, injuries should not be a issue, as all 53 players on the team’s active roster practiced on Friday and should be available for Sunday’s season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Cornerback Jason Verrett (calf) was a limited participant for a second straight day, while guard D.J. Fluker (ankle) was a full participant. After practicing on a limited basis on Thursday and taking a veteran rest day, receiver Keenan Allen was a full participant on Friday.
The Chargers have placed 14 players on injured reserve, including receiver Stevie Johnson (knee), running back Branden Oliver (Achilles), defensive lineman Sean Lissemore (shoulder) and tight end Jeff Cumberland (Achilles).
Still, San Diego made it through training camp with most of the team’s front-line players healthy.
Chargers head coach Mike McCoy attributed the team’s relative health to the work San Diego’s training staff performed with players during the offseason to get guys in shape, along with a little bit of luck.
McCoy said this year’s training camp was the most physical in the four years since he’s been here.
“Maybe our luck’s turning,” said McCoy, whose team dealt with a rash of injuries last year.
The Chargers traveled to Kansas City on Friday after a short practice at Chargers Park.
Rookie defensive end Joey Bosa did not practice again this week due to a minor hamstring injury.
Bosa is on the NFL’s exempt list, and has to be added to the active roster by Saturday to play against the Chiefs.
Bosa will not play on Sunday. However, he helped run defensive line drills and appeared to be moving around easier during the first portion of San Diego’s practice available to reporters, so there’s a chance the Ohio State product returns to practice next week.
“When he’s out there, he’ll be out there,” Chargers defensive coordinator John Pagano said. “It’s day-to-day with him right now. When he gets there, he’ll get here.
“Other than that, we’re focused on the Chiefs and getting the other guys ready to go right now. He’s got to handle what he needs to handle, and when his time is available to be here, he’ll be here. But until then, I don’t worry about it.”
