WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – New Orleans Saints long snapper Justin Drescher was placed on the non-football injury list to begin training camp with an unspecified ailment. Coach Sean Payton didn’t give a timetable for Drescher’s return, but intimated that it won’t be a long-term issue.
“We knew that with Justin, we had to back off a little until he is healthy,” Payton said.
In the meantime, the Saints signed undrafted rookie long snapper Chris Highland from Illinois State. Highland tried out with the Saints during their veteran minicamp in June.
The Saints didn’t appear to have any other new injuries on the first day of training camp practices Thursday. Safety Jairus Byrd, receiver Marques Colston and defensive end Glenn Foster remained sidelined, as expected.
Rookie running back Marcus Murphy returned to action after being placed on the non-football injury list last week.
