METAIRIE, La. -- Persistence paid off for New Orleans Saints running back Tim Hightower and safety Kenny Phillips.
The two veterans ended lengthy NFL droughts by making the 53-man roster Saturday. Hightower last played in a game in 2011, and Phillips last played in 2012.
Their stays could still be temporary -- especially Hightower, since running backs C.J. Spiller and Khiry Robinson are expected to return soon from injuries. Phillips’ status could change if and when Jairus Byrd returns from injury. But that doesn’t diminish their accomplishments.
New Orleans, you are amazing. I am thrilled to be with the Saints this season. Honored to be in #nola #katrina10 #saints #whodatnation

Hightower, who began his career with the Arizona Cardinals and Washington Redskins, suffered a torn ACL in 2011. He tried to come back with the Redskins in 2012, but it wasn’t until the fall of 2013 that doctors discovered he was dealing with an infection that stunted his recovery.
The Saints were the first team to give the 29-year-old a chance when he signed in January.
Phillips, 28, began his career as a first-round draft pick and Super Bowl winner with the New York Giants. But he was released by the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering a quadriceps injury in the summer of 2013. He has also battled injuries in both knees.
Both vets shared similar stories of doubt and frustration, family support, and perseverance this summer. "I came here because nobody else wanted me," Phillips said.
