The Seattle Seahawks placed strong safety Kam Chancellor on injured reserve Saturday and waived former starting guard Mark Glowinski. Seattle signed linebacker Kache Palacio and cornerback Mike Tyson from its practice squad in corresponding roster moves.
Palacio's promotion to the active roster gives the Seahawks another healthy linebacker, a necessity with the possibility that Seattle will be without both Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright in Sunday's NFC West showdown against the Los Angeles Rams. Wright (concussion/doubtful) isn't expected to play while Wagner (hamstring/questionable) will be a game-time decision, according to coach Pete Carroll.
Starting left cornerback Byron Maxwell (shoulder) and nickelback Justin Coleman (shoulder) were both on the injury report this past week, so promoting Tyson could be a similar hedge.
Chancellor had remained on the Seahawks' active roster even though Carroll said more than two weeks ago that Chancellor would not play again this season because of the neck injury he suffered in Week 10.
The delay in placing him on IR was likely for salary-cap purposes. Chancellor's contract would have counted the same against the cap either way. Placing him on IR, though, would also mean having to account for the contract of whomever replaces him on the roster. The Seahawks have been scraping by with minimal cap space for several weeks, so it seems that they couldn't afford to pay a replacement and, until now, they haven't needed the roster spot that Chancellor had been occupying.
Waiving Glowinski clears some cap space. A 2015 fourth-round pick, Glowinski began the season as Seattle's starter at right guard before he was replaced in Week 3 by Oday Aboushi. Rookie Ethan Pocic is now the starter there with Aboushi on IR.
Tyson is a rookie sixth-round pick. Palacio is a second-year undrafted player from Washington State.
