ASHBURN, Va. – Stephen Bowen wouldn’t come out and say it, nor would the Redskins. But if nothing else they’re optimistic he might be able to return Sunday against Tennessee.
Bowen increased his reps during practice Friday, trying to build more endurance and test his surgically-repaired right knee. After practice he said of his knee, “it’s been good.”
Coach Jay Gruden reiterated during his news conference that Bowen is closer to being ready than receiver Leonard Hankerson. Like Bowen, Hankerson opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list. Gruden did say he wasn’t sure whether Bowen would play Sunday.
Regardless, Bowen’s return will come soon, whether Sunday or the following week at Dallas. He knows that not many players return from microfracture surgery, especially defensive linemen who are 30 years old.
“It’s been a hard road back,” he said. “I finally feel healthy and I’m ready to get out there and have fun.”
If Bowen returns, the Redskins would have to make a corresponding move. A healthy Bowen would give Washington another big body inside to pair with Jason Hatcher in rush situations. If he can play, it’s doubtful Bowen would have more than a small role considering his layoff.
Meanwhile, linebacker Akeem Jordan (knee), corner Tracy Porter (hamstring) and quarterback Robert Griffin III (ankle) are out. Corner David Amerson (concussion) and linebacker Perry Riley (knee) are questionable. Riley has been limited in practice this week so there’s a good chance Will Compton will make his second straight start.
For Tennessee, quarterback Jake Locker (right hand) is questionable. Reports from Tennessee suggest backup Charlie Whitehurst will start. Neither quarterback is accurate, but Locker’s ability to run helped the Titans’ offense. Running back Shonn Greene (hamstring) and corner Coty Sensabaugh (knee) are doubtful. Defensive end Ropati Pitoitua (hand) is questionable.
