The legal tampering period begins Saturday, so teams can start talking to agents (well, officially at least) and exchanging monetary amounts. They can’t agree to a deal, however. Keep in mind that a number of names connected to the Washington Redskins after this period were never signed by Washington -- and players they did sign were not mentioned. That's your warning to not read too much into teams talking to an agent; it could mean they talked and realized they weren't a good match. Yet it gets reported as if they talked.
Here is a look at what the Redskins have done thus far, and the status of their own free agents:
Re-signed
Tight end Niles Paul (three years, potentially worth $10 million; full breakdown not available yet).
SS Duke Ihenacho (one year, $660,000 as an exclusive rights free agent).
OT Tom Compton (one year, $660,000).
Tendered
PK Kai Forbath (restricted free agent). The Redskins tendered him an offer, giving the Redskins rights to match any offer he receives. Forbath can negotiate with other teams until April 24.
Signed
DE Ricky Jean Francois (three years, $9 million). Here's his full contract breakdown.
Still unsigned
QB Colt McCoy: I was told there wasn’t much going on at this point. With Kirk Cousins and Robert Griffin III back, there is a good chance McCoy will be elsewhere this season.
WR Leonard Hankerson: I have heard other teams expressed interest in him, and the Redskins still feel he can play. But durability is a huge issue. There was not a lot going on as of a few days ago.
WR Santana Moss: Has not announced his retirement, but it’s hard to imagine him returning. Last season was frustrating for Moss.
RB Roy Helu: Will draw interest on the open market, and is and a good fit in certain roles. He is not much of a blocker.
OT Tyler Polumbus: There is nothing going on with the Redskins. He’s not expecting to return.
DE Jarvis Jenkins: The Redskins always liked his athleticism, but also felt he should have done more with it. Haven't heard any buzz about him returning.
NT Chris Neild: There is a chance he returns because the team likes him, but in this defensive system a backup nose tackle will play sparingly. That could prompt him to take a one-year deal elsewhere.
LB Brian Orakpo: There have been talks with the team about a possible return, but at this point most people I’ve spoken to around the league expect him to play elsewhere. Teammates who have spoken with him say he wasn't sure what was going to happen.
CB E.J. Biggers: I haven’t heard anything here; not sure why they would bring him back.
SS Brandon Meriweather: He was a later signee last offseason, and the defensive staff that had him was gone; they are already pursuing replacements (Tyvon Branch, who visited Friday).
