ASHBURN, Va. -- A few thoughts on the Washington Redskins' fourth-round pick.
The pick: Jamison Crowder, receiver/punt returner, Duke.
My take: Crowder doesn't fit the description of many receivers Scot McCloughan has drafted in the past. At 5-foot-8, he's a few inches shorter, but he can play in the slot and he's an excellent punt returner; he returned two for touchdowns last season. The Redskins could use help in both areas -- they haven't returned a punt for a touchdown since 2008.
Statistically speaking: Crowder certainly is a confident young man. "I feel I'm one of the best receivers in the draft; I feel I can make a big impact on offense," he said. His stats suggest he should feel confident. Crowder caught a combined 193 passes his last two years and had 23 touchdown receptions in his career. He also had 16 career 100-yard games. Crowder also averaged 13.37 yards on 65 punt returns in college, with four touchdowns. Crowder is fast, but he's also shifty and that makes him a threat in the open field.
The impact: The Redskins had maintained contact with veteran receiver Santana Moss, but it's hard to imagine them wanting to re-sign him now that they have Crowder. I also wonder what this means for Andre Roberts' future. They can't cut Roberts this year -- there would be no savings. He wasn't productive enough this past season and if that continues in 2015, they could cut him and save $4 million against the 2016 cap.
