Washington Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan received good news from his MRI test Saturday, a source close to the situation said. They revealed no further damage to his injured groin, though it's uncertain how much practice time he'll miss, if any.
Kerrigan injured his groin in the first quarter of Friday's preseason win over Buffalo and did not return. The injury was not considered bad, but the Redskins wanted him to get an MRI just to make sure.
The Redskins need Kerrigan to stay healthy because they're thin with pass-rushing outside linebackers. Second-year Preston Smith has looked good this summer, but Trent Murphy was moved back there after transitioning to end. Murphy's strength hasn't been as a pass-rusher, though he gives them depth.
The Redskins released outside linebacker Willie Jefferson, who had been in the mix to be the fourth player at this spot. A week ago, one source mentioned his length and athleticism as a reason he might win the job over Houston Bates.
There's still no word on the results of running back Keith Marshall's MRI on his left elbow. He was hurt at the end of his first carry Friday.
