Continuing a month-long series analyzing players who are on the Buffalo Bills' roster bubble and where they potentially fit in 2015:
Name: Clay Burton
Position: Tight end
Age: 22
2014 stats: 12 games, 18 receptions (156 yards, 1 touchdown; for Florida)
Chance of making 53-man roster: 25 percent
Why he should make it: Burton caught my eye this spring during OTAs and minicamp when he saw some first-team action, which was unique among undrafted rookies. The Bills' open competition at tight end behind Charles Clay gives Burton a chance to sneak onto the roster, even if he isn't the No. 2 or No. 3 option at the position. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman could go four-deep at the spot and Burton has the size (6-foot-4, 259 pounds) and physical build of an NFL tight end. Unlike sixth-round draft pick Nick O'Leary, Burton's college production won't win any awards, but he has some traits that could result in the Bills keeping him on their roster.
Why he shouldn't make it: The path for any undrafted rookie to make the 53-man roster is steep. The Bills didn't have any undrafted rookies make their team out of training camp last season and with a deep roster at most positions, the odds are against it happening this year. As long as he doesn't turn into a preseason sensation, the Bills could probably waive Burton and sign him back to their practice squad. Clay, O'Leary and some combination of Chris Gragg, MarQueis Gray and Matthew Mulligan are enough to fill out the depth chart on the 53-man roster.
Closest competition: Mulligan, Gragg, Gray.
