The Washington Redskins cut veteran receiver Aldrick Robinson to make room for outside linebacker Gabe Miller, who was promoted from the practice squad Saturday, according to a team source.
The Redskins were thin at outside linebacker with only one reserve in Everette Brown, who had to sub for a temporarily injured Ryan Kerrigan last week. Miller initially made the roster out of training camp after having a strong summer as a pass-rusher. He lasted four games before being cut on Sept. 26 and then re-signed four days later to the practice squad. The Redskins originally signed him last season as a tight end before moving him to linebacker in the offseason -- he played both defensive end and tight end at Oregon State.
Cutting Robinson was only a mild surprise. The Redskins were reluctant to part with him earlier in the season when Leonard Hankerson was removed from the physically unable to perform list, giving them seven receivers. They like his speed and the fact that he can play multiple positions. But after dressing in the first five games, and catching one pass for six yards, he was inactive for the next seven. Robinson, a sixth-round pick in 2011, caught a career-best 18 passes last season. He has caught 30 passes for 608 yards and five touchdowns in his career.
The Redskins still have six receivers, though one of them, DeSean Jackson, might not play Sunday vs. St. Louis. Jackson could not practice all week because of a fibula contusion and will be a game-time decision.
