New Washington Redskins defensive end Ricky Jean Francois' contract does not pay him like a guaranteed starter, but, much like Chris Baker a year before, like a top backup -- and potential starter.
Jean Francois, who signed with the Redskins last week, will have a salary-cap hit of $2 million this season with a cash value of $4 million -- the same numbers Baker had last year, the first of his three-year deal.
Jean Francois' base salary will be $1 million, which is fully guaranteed. The Redskins could use more line depth and will have to pursue some at a starting level. One AFC scout said Jean Francois was best used in reserve, one reason why the Colts released him rather than have him count $5.5 million against the salary cap.
But the Redskins' contract suggests they view him as a rotation guy and not a guaranteed starter. After signing him, they released defensive end Stephen Bowen and end/nose tackle Barry Cofield (who was waived with a failed physical designation; if healthy, he could return).
