The Washington Redskins did not receive any compensatory picks for a third consecutive year -- and they likely won’t get any in 2016, either.
Unlike last season, they did lose one player who signed a bigger contract with another team in Brian Orakpo. However, by signing Chris Culliver to a similar annual amount it negates that loss. Plus, they also signed Stephen Paea to a deal that averages $5.25 million and lost no one to a similar deal. Picks are awarded based in large part on whether a team lost more than it signed in free agency, in addition to the value of some of those players. This year's picks were awarded based off the 2014 free agency period.
How big is it to add compensatory picks? The Redskins have had 12 in their history. Like any other draft picks, some have worked and some have not. New general manager Scot McCloughan turned one of his compensatory picks in San Francisco into end Ricky Jean Francois (seventh round, 2009) and he just signed with Washington as a backup end.
